Shri Kamakshi Temple, Shiroda

Date: 11th July,2010
Location: Shiroda, 12 km away from Kavlem in Ponda.

Originally located in Raia in Salcete taluka, this temple is dedicated to Kamakshi or Goddess Kamakhya. She is also known as Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, or Shantadurga, the Goddess of Peace. Besides being a Goddess of Peace, Kamakshi is also quite violent when it comes to the destruction of evil. People of all faiths from all over Goa worship this goddess who is believed to fulfil desired wishes.

Every Amavasya (New Moon) day, devotees flock to this temple to pray to Goddess Kamakshi and ask for their wishes to come true. It is said that any puja or sadhana that is performed on amavasya has a greater impact. On this day, people come to the temple as early as four in the morning and wait in the long serpentine queues just to get darshan of Goddess Kamakshi. This time, amavasya being a Sunday, the crowd was larger than usual and it took us almost 2 hours to finish our prayers. Amidst the noise of the countless people waiting for the darshan, one could hear the temple trustees auctioning saris and other offerings that were previously given to the goddess.

I bought a nauvari (nine yard sari) for myself and am hoping to wear it some time soon…
